Chapter 16

“I’m just trying to help you understand, Isaac. This ain’t land for a bloke to be a pacifist in. I get that the Good Book is filled with the message of turning the other cheek, but let’s be sensible here. If some arsehole decides to pull a pistol on you, are you not allowed to defend yourself?” Arthur asked as we rode along the trail toward the Cascades.

It had been a couple of days since our confrontation at the Farewell Bend Crossing, and we’d spent the entire time mulling over the subject of Christianity, God, and pacificism. I’d been a bit frustrated with how events had played at the river crossing and tried to mask it from the others, but each of them was able to see it plain as day. Cora and Kemal opted to not pick at the scab, but Arthur wouldn’t let it go.

I responded in a similar fashion that I had for the last couple days, “Violence cannot be answered with violence. It’s the same as trying to put out a fire with another fire, giving a drunkard more whiskey, or beating a scared horse. Nothing good can come of it. Sure, you killed someone threatening your life, but that action ripples out. Before you know it, someone else will come looking for you because you killed the previous fellow. You kill him, more and more will come. The answer is to defy violence. It’s to spread kindness and love.”

“So, you would just lay your life down and hope that God sorts them out later?”

“I would plea to the good nature in every man and pray that he sees reason. We should never envy a man of violence, and we should not choose any of his ways. Murder is a sin, no matter what form or reason it takes.”

Arthur took off his hat and ran a hand through his shaggy blonde, pulling it back from his face before he stuffed the hat back onto his head. “It’s a wonder you’ve both survived this long out here without getting your hands a bit dirty. Maybe you are blessed, preacher.”

“I’m not a preacher.”

“Could’ve fooled me, lad, you sure spout off like one.”

“We tried talkin to em, Isaac. They was not goin to take us across the river without a little hard convincin,” Cora chimed in.

Kemal said, “I appreciate you trying it your way, but I’ve been seen the hate in white folks eyes more than enough times to know they ain’t changing their minds about me.”

“That’s because they can’t see through their own foolish views. Therefore, we need to bring a message of peace with us. Look at Cora for instance. It was not two weeks ago that she was going to leave you for dead hanging from that tree, Kemal. Now here she is, straying from hate speech and riding beside you,” I said. “Folks can change if you just help them find the right path through all the muck and mire.”

“That don’t mean I like the feller,” Cora said.
